Presented by Martin Guitar, Luaka Bop and Ace Hotel

String Theory with Doug Hream Blunt presented by Martin Guitar, Luaka Bop and Ace Hotel

I’m just so excited!!” — Doug Hream Blunt

"Doug's open spirit and trust in collective, spontaneous endeavors has been a real motor in the shaping of the String Theory series. We are thrilled to be helping the local music communities as he embarks on his newest music adventure." — Kelly Sawdon, Partner and Chief Brand Officer, Ace Hotel

Doug Hream Blunt didn't learn to play music until taking a "how to start a band" class at age 35, but he picked it up quickly. He formed a backing band out of his classmates. He would only perform at the hospital where he worked as a nurse, and when he’d finish a new song and was able to get everyone together, made a few rare appearances on the local San Francisco cable access television. He eventually recorded an album and EP of hypnotic lo-fi soul/pop at his teachers house, which recently excavated and reissued by the good souls at Luaka Bop. On Friday, June 10, he will be playing in our lobby at Ace London for an open-rehearsal in preparation for his appearances at the Field Day Festival that weekend.

This live performance will be celebrating many firsts: the event will mark Doug's first live show ever as well as the first performance by his newly community-formed band The Doug Hream Blunt Experience. In addition, we will be kicking off our String Theory series — a collaboration between Luaka BopMartin Guitar and Ace Hotel which seeks to benefit local adult education and music therapy centers.

The event at Ace Hotel London Shoreditch will be serving St Mungo – a housing association based in London whose mission is to provide aid, resources and shelter to London's homeless population. At the end of the performance, Martin will gift a guitar to St Mungo's band, Mental Health, who will be playing with Doug at the Field Day Festival that weekend.

About Luaka Bop
Founded by David Byrne in 1989, Luaka Bop has introduced Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, Tim Maia and William Onyeabor to the world at large, and become home to artists like Tom Ze, Floating Points, Cornershop, Zap Mama, and Janka Nabay among others. A few years ago, Luaka Bop reissued the music of William Onyeabor, which may have been the most complicated, if also one of the richest, undertakings in label’s (rarely straightforward) 26-year history. Since, they have put out two artists, whose background and music couldn’t be different from the next: Doug Hream Blunt, a nurse who learned to play music at the age of 35, and Floating Points, the musical genius that is Sam Shepherd, with a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

About Doug Hream Blunt
Doug Hream Blunt learned to play music in the late 1980s at the age of thirty-five through an adult music class organized by a high school music teacher and his wife in their small San Francisco garage. Doug performed regularly to patients in the hospital he worked at, and has been driven by ties to public and community-driven uses of music as a therapeutic tool. His story reinforces the truth that music is for everyone, and that success can be achieved at any stage of life. To learn more about Doug, you can watch this video by Swedish animator Leo Lyx and narrated by Doug’s 11-year old daughter, Juanita.
